Safari Overview

  • Duration: 9 Days / 8 Nights
  • Destinations: Masai Mara National Reserve & Manda Island
  • Camps: Governors’ Camp, Manda Bay Lodge
  • Best For: Honeymooners, first-time safari travellers, classic Kenya safari and beach combinations

This itinerary combines one of Kenya’s most iconic safari landscapes with one of its most atmospheric coastal escapes. It begins in the Masai Mara, where you spend four nights at Governors’ Camp enjoying classic game viewing in one of East Africa’s best-known reserves, before continuing to Manda Island for four nights of barefoot island relaxation at Manda Bay Lodge.

The result is a Kenya journey that feels both timeless and easy: classic tented safari in the bush, seamless light-aircraft connections and a beautifully contrasting Indian Ocean finish.

The Masai Mara National Reserve

One of Africa’s great safari destinations, the Masai Mara National Reserve is famed for its sweeping grasslands, excellent big-game viewing and the annual drama of the Great Migration. From roughly July to September, vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope move north from Tanzania’s Serengeti, followed by lion, hyena and cheetah.

Even beyond migration season, the Mara offers rewarding year-round wildlife viewing, with healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, crocodile, hippo and a wide variety of resident predators and plains game.

Camp One: Governors’ Camp

The safari begins with four nights at Governors’ Camp, one of the Masai Mara’s most established and best-known tented camps. Located inside the reserve itself, the camp sits in riverine forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, with wildlife often close by and excellent access to the surrounding plains.

Accommodation is in a luxury tent with en-suite bathroom, and the experience is classic East African safari in feel: under-canvas comfort, a strong sense of place, and easy access to daily game drives in custom 4WD safari vehicles.

  • 4 Nights
  • Luxury tented safari camp inside the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • Excellent wildlife viewing and classic safari atmosphere
  • Includes meals, drinks, laundry, airstrip transfers and daily safari activities

Insider highlight: A hot air balloon safari is included during your Mara stay, offering one of the most memorable ways to experience the scale and beauty of this famous landscape.

Manda Island & the Lamu Archipelago

From the Masai Mara, the journey continues to Kenya’s coast and the Lamu Archipelago, where Manda Island offers a very different mood and landscape. Here the pace slows, the setting softens and the focus shifts from game drives to white-sand beaches, warm ocean water and laid-back island life.

This part of Kenya is known for its atmospheric coastal culture, dhow sailing traditions, marine activities and a quieter, more characterful style of beach stay than the country’s larger mainland resorts.

Camp Two: Manda Bay Lodge

The second half of the itinerary is spent at Manda Bay Lodge, a relaxed and stylish beach retreat on the northern edge of Manda Island. Set on a beautiful stretch of pearlescent white sand and surrounded by coconut palms and coral gardens, it offers a lovely barefoot-luxury contrast to the safari portion of the trip.

Guest rooms are spacious and airy, and the stay includes all meals, drinking water, airstrip transfers, laundry, Wi-Fi and the use of a range of non-motorised watersports and lodge facilities.

  • 4 Nights
  • Beachfront island lodge in the Lamu Archipelago
  • Excellent for post-safari relaxation
  • Includes meals, airstrip transfers, laundry, Wi-Fi and selected watersports

Insider highlight: Manda Bay is a particularly attractive beach finish for travellers who want something more intimate and atmospheric than a larger resort-style coastal stay.
